The Client: Spiralis Energy
Covering more than 70% of Earth, the ocean is an immense source of untapped energy. Spiralis Energy aims to harness this renewable power to meet a significant portion of the world’s electricity needs, helping to advance toward a net-zero future. Spiralis Energy is actively creating solutions to make this vision a reality.
Through ground-breaking technology, Spiralis Energy capture tidal currents and transform them into a clean, sustainable energy source. With each ebb and flow, Spiralis Energy is propelling us toward a more sustainable future.
The Challenge
Spiralis Energy has created an innovative generation system called the Axial Skelter, designed to be both easy to manufacture and maintain while delivering strong power output thanks to its unique, patent-pending design.
Recently, they completed testing on their first prototype with highly promising results, enabling them to move forward with the development of a second-generation model. This progress brings them one step closer to delivering dependable, sustainable energy for all.
Their main challenge was achieving precise, real-time monitoring of torque and power output generated by the Axial Skelter.

“Research into the industry leaders for torque measuring equipment led us to Datum who were incredibly helpful throughout the acquisition process, providing a detailed consultation on the best equipment to use, and working diligently to ensure it was all delivered to meet our very tight timelines.”
George Illovy, Spiralis Energy

The Solution
By integrating with a PTO system and attaching an RS425 sensor, the Spiralis Energy team successfully measured the torque and calculated the exact power output of the Axial Skelter.
The results were instantly accessible via our Datum Connect App, which enables real-time data logging for accurate and streamlined test results. This allowed Spiralis Energy to directly compare their real-world data with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data previously modelled in the lab. The close match between the two sets of data confirmed the accuracy of their predictions, marking the test as a significant success.
The Outcome
The RS425 contactless torque transducer from Datum Electronics is engineered for easy integration into any drivetrain or test rig, compatible with both spline and key-way shafts.
This sensor offers several advantages over traditional torque measurement systems, including zero bearing friction, suitability for high-speed and high-torque applications, and durability in harsh environments.
With options for IP upgrades to meet specific customer requirements, the RS425 is built for adaptability. It connects seamlessly with our Datum Connect App, providing real-time data at your fingertips for streamlined monitoring and analysis.

“The RS425 was vital to the success of our system as it allowed us to plot accurately our torque and power outputs. Throughout our installation and trials process, Datum was on hand to provide troubleshooting and advise us on how to get the most accurate results possible.”
