We recently participated in SMM Hamburg, one of the world’s leading trade fairs for the maritime industry.
Held in the bustling port city of Hamburg, SMM 2024 brought together over 2,200 exhibitors and attracted close to 50,000 attendees. As usual, attending with our team was a great opportunity to feel the pulse. It felt more than ever like almost everyone at the show shared very common goals. Our booth drew interest from ship owners, operators, and engineers eager to understand how our solutions could empower their operations. Here’s what stood out for us during the week.
Regulatory compliance isn’t usually an exciting thing, but with performance improvement being an outcome and decarbonisation urgency behind all that we do, the week was characterised by a high level of energy and enthusiasm. The continued extended voyage routing following geopolitical disruptions is also adding to the pressing need to reduce fuel consumption.
We could also see that with some initial experience now under the belt with CII and EU ETS, our industry is now feeling much more informed and ready, but there is still much to do.

During the week, we heard much about the details associated with making the right decisions: whether refining how one is operating current tonnage, making new investment decisions around procuring or operating energy saving devices or how to specify new tonnage from a digital perspective. A common theme is that digitalisation has now become imperative to not only be compliant, but to ensure one can operate a viable business today and to successfully plan business decisions for the future.
We are hearing that whatever responsibility one has, whether onboard or ashore, gathering data and creating insights is what everyone wants and what everyone is offering. But to make this work in practice without overwhelming clients with data is key. Our clients expect to keep the data gathering as simple as it needs to be and to also work with a trusted source to help them create the right insight with that data. This means that extensive collaborations are now a character of our market and key to successful growth for all.

Consequently, throughout the event, our team met with existing and new partners ranging from energy saving device providers, weather routing companies, hull cleaning companies, class societies and technical consultants. These engaging conversations helped us immensely with our vision to create value for our clients and partners.
As we wrap up another successful edition of SMM Hamburg, we are excited about the future of shipping and the role that Datum Electronics will continue to play in it.
To everyone who visited our booth, we extend a heartfelt thank you. Your insights, questions, and enthusiasm for the future of maritime technology made this event a tremendous success for Datum Electronics. We look forward to continuing these conversations, fostering partnerships, and delivering the solutions that will drive the future of shipping through precision, data and innovation.
