What is the Coriolis Effect?
The Coriolis effect is an inertial force that causes objects in motion to be deflected to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. This is due to the Earth’s rotation on its axis.
To understand the Coriolis effect, imagine that you are standing on a spinning platform and you throw a ball straight ahead. As the ball travels through the air, the platform rotates beneath it. As a result, the ball will appear to curve to the right from your perspective.
The same thing happens on a global scale. When air or water moves over the Earth’s surface, it is deflected by the Earth’s rotation. The deflection is greatest at the poles and least at the equator.
