Key Features

How Does it Work?

The Datum SPM accurately monitors the power transmitted through a shaft by measuring torque using our proprietary strain gauge technology, alongside integrated shaft speed sensors. By
combining these two parameters, the system calculates the mechanical shaft power, providing a true representation of the power delivered by an engine or generator.

The Datum SPM has been used extensively within the commercial shipping industry and has helped operators reduce running costs across fleets by maximising:

  • Fuel Savings by enabling real-time vessel performance optimisation
  • Maintenance Scheduling through predictive insights and reducing unplanned downtime
  • Equipment Protection via early detection of mechanical issues and overload condition

System Modularity and Upgradability

In addition to its stand-alone advantages, the Datum SPM is designed as a modular system, allowing seamless upgrades to incorporate our latest innovative solutions:

For us, the big advantage of the Datum Torque meter is its modular design. As the rotor belt’s size is adjustable, it can fit on any size of shaft, which gives the system great flexibility. The installations are carried out by very knowledgeable and well-experienced commissioning engineers, which is complemented by an excellent level of pre and after-sales support provided by the broader Datum team. The Datum Torque meter plays an important role in the efficient operation of our performance monitoring system by generating reliable data which we can use to optimise voyages and maintain our fleet.

Benefits

Measuring actual shaft power is a critical input for vessel performance analysis, providing a reliable reference point that supports the assessment of:

  • Engine Performance and Optimisation
  • Hull Condition and Fouling
  • Propeller Condition
  • Specific Fuel Consumption (SFOC)
  • New Fuel Trials
  • Operational Efficiency Planning
  • Engine and Hull Condition Changes
  • New Energy-Saving Devices

Fitted at an early stage, the Datum SPM can by used during ship acceptance trials and serve as a continuous indicator of vessel condition throughout its life cycle.

FAQs

  • Datum’s range of marine shaft power meters have been designed specifically to meet the requirements of commercial marine customers to provide real time and ongoing power monitoring data on ships. With a modular design suitable for shafts of varying sizes from 150mm to over 1100mm, these maintenance-free contactless devices are extremely reliable.

  • Datum Electronics’ marine shaft power meters can be specified to work with all common supply voltage standards, for example single or triple-phase AC at 110-230V, or 12/24V DC.  They all have IP67 envioronmental sealing and can operate at a wide range of temperatures from -15 to +80 celsius

  • A typical installation and commissioning cycle takes 1-2 days and there is no further calibration required.
